An intelligent approach to food production

Land cannot be multiplied, freshwater and energy are not available everywhere. However, we humans need nourishment to survive.

Local production is the catchword of the future. It is vital to use the water, energy, and land resources in the best possible way and unburden the environment at the same time.

The population grows, especially in Asia, Africa, and South America. We cannot afford to continue clearing natural forests or jungles since we would rob ourselves of an essential resource. The forests are our largest oxygen supplier – at the same time, the trees store high amounts of pollutants that we produce.

In some countries the climatic prerequisites needed to grow and harvest sufficient food locally do not exist.

 

The „Food Supply Center“ can change this.

In Europe, traditional agriculture calculates as follows: In order to supply one human with food for one year approx. 2,300 m² cultivable land is needed. With a Food Supply Center about 20 m² suffice.

For example, the Food Supply Center uses the waste water from its fish farm as fertilizer for the vegetable and fruit production while the energy supply is secured by solar cells on the roof.

A Food Supply Center can also be integrated into existing infrastructure. Through the use of greenhouses one is – except for the Polar regions – relatively independent of the seasons.

Ein intelligenter Lösungsansatz zur Lebensmittelproduktion

Land ist nicht vermehrbar, Frischwasser und Energie sind nicht überall verfügbar. Wir Menschen brauchen jedoch Nahrung, um zu überleben.

Lokale Produktion ist das Schlagwort der Zukunft. Es gilt, die Ressourcen Wasser, Energie und Land bestmöglich zu nutzen und gleichzeitig die Umwelt zu entlasten.

Die Bevölkerung wächst, insbesondere in Asien, Afrika und Südamerika. Wir können es uns nicht leisten, weiter Natur- oder Urwälder zu roden, denn damit berauben wir uns selbst um eine wesentliche Ressource. Die Wälder sind unser größter Sauerstofflieferant – gleichzeitig speichern die Bäume hohe Mengen an Schadstoffen, die wir produzieren.

In manchen Ländern sind die klimatischen Voraussetzungen nicht gegeben, um lokal ausreichend Nahrungsmittel anzubauen und zu ernten.

 

Das „Food Supply Center“ kann dies ändern.

In Europa rechnet die traditionelle Landwirtschaft wie folgt: Um einen Menschen ein Jahr lang mit Nahrung zu versorgen, benötigt man ca. 2.300 m² Anbaufläche. Mit einem Food Supply Center sind es nur etwa 20 m².

Das Food Supply Center nutzt zum Beispiel die Abwässer aus der Fischzucht als Dünger für die Gemüse- und Obstproduktion, während auf dem Dach die Energie-versorgung mit Solarzellen gesichert wird.

Ein Food Supply Center kann auch in vorhandene Infrastrukturen integriert werden. Durch die Nutzung von Gewächshäusern ist man – bis auf die Polarregionen – relativ unabhängig von den Jahreszeiten.

FireExx as "First responder"

The fire extinguishers we offer in cooperation with FireExx have an entirely different objective than the conventional fire suppression systems.

Our goal is to smother a newly developing fire

1)     in the first minute with a system

2)    that is child’s play to use.

It was therefore important to us to have a system that indeed can be used by children and adults directly and anytime.

Because what good does the fanciest 6 kg fire extinguisher if it has to be brought up from the cellar first, if it is too heavy and unwieldly to quickly handle in an emergency or too complicated to use in the first place?

We just have to ask ourselves: What happens with a fire after 2 minutes?

Very simple: After 2 minutes we usually have no chance of reaching the fire (its source) anymore. The heat created during 120 seconds is too high for the human body, the fire immediately robs the air of oxygen and massive smoke develops.

Even if one has the best fire suppression system there is no sense in using it anymore since one cannot reach the source of the fire.

Our solution is different: firefighting during the first 60 seconds!

This is why we chose FireExx as our partner.

FireExx has a unique formula and is a lightweight in each size (150 ml, 300 ml, and 800 ml).

No pressure container, no aerosols, no disposal problem since the material is biodegradable and the plastic container can be recycled.

Easy to use and easy to keep anywhere. We recommend to have several in the house and to place them at strategic points (e.g. the kitchen, bedrooms etc.).

FireExx is certified by the Dutch authorities, with the strictest fire prevention regulations in Europe.

Denn was nutzt der tollste 6 kg Feuerlöscher, wenn er zuerst aus dem Keller hinaufgeholt werden muss, wenn er zu schwer und unhandlich ist, um im Notfall schnell bedient zu werden oder die Handhabung von vorneherein zu kompliziert ist?

Wir müssen uns einfach fragen: Was passiert bei einem Feuer nach 2 Minuten?

Ganz einfach: Nach 2 Minuten haben wir in der Regel keine Chance mehr, das Feuer (den Brandherd) zu erreichen. Die Hitze, die sich innerhalb von 120 Sekunden entwickelt, ist zu hoch für den menschlichen Körper, das Feuer raubt der Luft sofort den Sauerstoff und lässt massiven Rauch entstehen.

Auch wenn man das beste Feuerlöschsystem hat, macht es keinen Sinn mehr, es zu benutzen, da man den Brandherd nicht mehr erreichen kann.

In order to develop currently fallow land three things are needed:

Based on the calculations done by the Institute for Simulation and Complexity Management (ISCM) a yet underdeveloped area can be enabled to support itself economically within 20 years.

 

What does it take and what needs to happen?

 

First of all, such infrastructure projects are designed to counter the migration from the countryside. This is achieved through the creation of jobs which increase purchasing power. The decentralized power we are setting up is produced where it is needed. It is primarily used to intelligently process the agricultural products and then cool or freeze them for storage before distribution.

 

We work in energy sections no bigger than 20 MW in order to be easy on the power grid and not to lose energy through the transformation from low to medium voltage, medium to high voltage and vice versa.

Was braucht es dazu, und was muss geschehen?

 

Zunächst soll mit solchen Infrastrukturprojekten der Landflucht in diesem Gebiet entgegengewirkt werden. Dies erreicht man durch die Schaffung von Arbeitsplätzen und damit Kaufkraft. Die dezentrale Energie, die wir aufbauen, wird dort hergestellt, wo sie auch gebraucht wird. Sie dient primär dazu, die landwirtschaftlichen Produkte intelligent zu verarbeiten und dann gekühlt oder gefroren zum Abtransport aufzubewahren.

 

Wir arbeiten in Energieeinheiten nicht größer als 20 MW, damit wir die Leitungsnetze schonen und keine Energieverluste durch Auf- und Abspannen von Niedrig- zu Mittelspannung, Mittel- zu Hochspannung und umgekehrt entstehen.

Affordable houses in developing countries

One of the biggest problems in the development of emergent countries is the existing or rather non-existing living space. Often the circumstances are such that one cannot count on a reasonable living situation, while not in deed comfort is the crucial factor but safety.

 

Safe living is a basic requirement for development though, just like work. Only when people are well accommodated they feel secure and will strive.

 

For this reason we have worked with our technology partners, investors, and initiators of infrastructure projects to find solutions. We found manufacturers of reasonable – so called “low-cost” – houses that have qualitatively sound answers to the specific requirements we encounter in different countries. The goal here is to realize a turn-key price of approx. 5,000 Euro for such a “low-cost” house of 40-45 sqm for example.

 

We attach great value to stability (earthquakes and wind), functionality, and safety. The sanitary facilities have to be inside the house so that women in particular do not need to leave the house anymore and therefore are no longer subject to the related hazards.

 

Depending on the location and customer wishes renewable energy solutions can be incorporated as well.

Bezahlbare Häuser in Entwicklungsländern

Eines der größten Probleme in der Entwicklung von aufstrebenden Ländern ist der vorhandene bzw. nicht vorhandene Wohnraum. Oft sind die Gegebenheiten derart, dass man nicht von einer vernünftigen Wohnsituation ausgehen kann, wobei nicht etwa Komfort das ausschlaggebende Thema ist, sondern Sicherheit.

 

Sicheres Wohnen ist aber eine Grundvoraussetzung für Entwicklung, genauso wie Arbeit. Nur wenn Menschen gut aufgehoben sind, fühlen sie sich wohl und streben voran.

 

Aus diesem Grund haben wir gemeinsam mit unseren Technologiepartnern, Investoren und Initiatoren von Infrastrukturprojekten an Lösungen gearbeitet. Wir haben Hersteller von vernünftigen - sogenannten „Low-Cost“ - Häusern gefunden, die auf die speziellen Anforderungen, denen wir in den verschiedenen Ländern begegnen, qualitativ saubere Antworten geben können. Zielsetzung hierbei ist, für ein solches „Low-Cost“ Haus von beispielsweise 40-45 qm einen Turn-key Preis von ca. 5.000 Euro zu realisieren.

 

Wir legen dabei großen Wert auf Stabilität (Erdbeben und Wind), Funktionalität und Sicherheit. Der Sanitärbereich muss im Haus untergebracht sein, damit insbesondere Frauen das Haus nicht verlassen müssen und so den damit verbundenen Gefahren nicht mehr ausgesetzt sind.

Decentralized solutions for the energy supply are probably an important subject for the future. The available power grid is fully occupied and additional feeds lead to problems of a technical and financial nature. Sustainable efficiency plays an important role here, not the cheapest price. Water becomes an asset of increasing value

In a workshop on the occasion of the exhibition in Jeddah/Saudi Arabia, AMBRA pointed out the great importance of water.
Of particular interest were the contributions concerning the subjects sewage treatment and sludge use.
In the discussion after the presentation it became clear that the whole region has recognized the meaning of the sensible use of water, sewage and sludge.
In this context, AMBRA also mentioned the developments of Gauff Ingenieure from Frankfurt.
Gauff is currently developing a new procedure to save surface water (e. g. rain). In a pilot project they will demonstrate how it can be saved and directly offered to the consumers.
Mr. Tönges could not reveal any details because the project is confidential, but it is already clear that the project has great potential.
It is evident that in a few decades the fight for usable water will clearly get more pronounced and violent conflicts cannot be ruled out.

AMBRA Reind - Making the ocean cleaner

The whole world knows about the reports of the immensely large plastic carpet on the high seas, which is extremely harmful not only to the environment but to humanity as well.  This plastic floating around in the ocean eventually disintegrates into smaller pieces and becomes part of the food chain.  As sea critters and fishes consume this plastic and we then consume these animals, we are essentially poisoning ourselves. 

AMBRA Reind has developed a technological solution to this problem where we actively capture and fish out hazardous materials from the ocean.  Our next step is to install our AMBRA Reind technology on a tanker, recollect the plastic waste and from this produce gas and bunker fuel. This fuel and gas make the AMBRA Reind tanker 100% self-sustainable as it can now fuel and drive itself. The bunker fuel obtained is stored in the ship's hold and then released to other tankers for further use in ports.

The AMBRA Reind tanker continues its operations at sea while it collects plastic and transforms it back into gas and bunker fuel.  Slowly but surely, we are cleaning the world's oceans and producing useful energy while we do so.

Fire2Ice Innovation

A true innovation in the portable fire extinguishing systems segment, Fire2Ice, in contrast to previously known and commercially available fire extinguishers, contains no propellant gases, aerosols or compressed air.  It is completely environmentally friendly.  Through its patented elastomeric force that the spray maintains a constant, even keel amount of pressure. This technology allows for greater control and stability ultimately leading to higher safety levels.  

While conventional powder fire extinguishers normally handle gas pressures up to about 20 psi and extinguishing spray cans handle gas pressures at around 10 psi, Fire2Ice's low pressure system F-Exx®, is only pressurized at approximately 2 psi.  The amount of energy contained in the system corresponds to only a fraction of the amount of energy in conventional systems thus reducing explosion hazard.  Even when it comes to disposal, the F-Exx trademarked technology poses no risks.  

Conventional gas pressure systems function by progressively emptying its contents and simultaneously decreasing the pressure within their containers.  As a result, the spray behavior fluctuates, allowing for less control.  This also means that the initial pressure of the container has to be fairly high in order to allow for enough pressure near to the end of the container.  The F-Exx® Fire2Ice pressure system is regulated throughout the entire operation ensuring maximum efficiency and control.   

AMBRA GmbH develops waste to Energy Project

AMBRA GmbH has developed a new concept for processing municipal waste.  From approximately 2,000 tons of fresh waste, AMBRA can produce 50 MW of electricity.  This technology provides great news for clients as this developed method allows for the use of  an "endless" supply of energy from sustainable solutions.

The process consists of first separating the organic from the inorganic waste.  The biogas produced from the organic waste is used to create electricity.  The inorganic waste is separated by submitting it to a heating value of 19,000 kJ/kg.  This RDF material is then also converted to power through a gasification process.  Together, the conversion of the organic and the inorganic waste reach the goal of producing 50 MW from 2,000 t/d MSW with an organic content of 60%.

The special feature of the AMBRA concept is that it can be built in a decentralized manner.  This protects the existing pipeline network. In this specific case the customer wants to install at 2 locations.  Expansion is very straightforward because of AMBRA's modular solution.  The output power is guaranteed by AMBRA's partners and is also managed by internationally known waste management experts.

AMBRA REIND plans project in Almeria, Spain

With its new technology for converting hard plastic, tires and other substances to bunker fuel and/or electricity, the company is planning to establish a project in southern Spain.

The first discussions were led by the managing director Wolfgang Tönges and business development manager Andreas Thoma at the proposed site.  In the region, there are currently 33,000 hectares of greenhouses producing large constant amounts of plastic every year.  Some of this plastic will be converted back into electricity by AMBRA REIND and will be used by farmers and companies in the area.  With 8,000 tons of input material, AMBRA REIND is able to create 6.5 million liters of bunker fuel as well as a significant amount of gas.

AMBRA and REIND start a Joint Venture for the recovery of oil from plastic waste

REIND company from Hungary has developed a system for the recovery of oil from specified plastic wastes.

In Hungary there are already some plants from REIND in operation. The purpose of our cooperation is to jointly work the national German market. The first project, which shall be started this year already, is especially intended to give proof of the successful large-scale operation on a sustained basis.

In addition, further waste types such as used tyres, plastic foils, electrical waste etc. will be tested, examined and developed in the large-scale operation.

Up to now, it has often been possible to guarantee a smooth process stability only with small amounts of input material.

The AMBRA REIND plant currently planned for Germany will treat considerably higher amounts of plastic waste with an annual capacity of 16,000 tons. As the system has a modular structure, it can be extended to 50,000 to 60,000 tons a year without difficulty. 

This project will be realized with permanent scientific assistance, and about 13 million litres of so-called “bunker fuel” und about 4.8 million cubic metres of high calorific gas will be produced from the waste.

If the energy amounts are converted into electricity with cogeneration plants, this results in an annual electricity output of 57,200 MWh. 

The investment for the first plant in Germany amounts to approximately 14 million Euros. 

Successful waste water treatment in Qatar

In cooperation with our sister company in Qatar, German Sustainable Solutions W.L.L. (GSS), AMBRA GmbH was given the task of developing and implementing a solution for the treatment of grey water from mosques in Doha.

This project has now been completed with great success. The technical solution developed by AMBRA/GSS treats the waste water that effectively that the produced water would even be suited for human consumption.

The laboratory analyses confirmed that there were absolutely no coli bacteria left in the treated water. Moreover, the quality of the treated water has been improved, in particular the areas pH-value, sodium content, TDS values and the water hardness could be increased.

Due to cultural and religious conditions, it cannot be realized to use the produced water for human consumption, irrespective of its quality. Instead, the treated water is being used for irrigation.

Involving the Ministry of Endowments and Islamic Affairs and the University of Brunswick, a broad acceptance could be obtained for the new technology so that the implementation at other mosques is being prepared.
