Autarkic water circuit saves energy

It is not an utopian dream what the University of Technology in Hamburg (TUHH) has developed in cooperation with Intaqua AG and what Faber company as cooperation partner distributes in different countries where they are already engaged in business.

The water is kept in circulation via two separate water circuits, the black-water circuit for toilet flushing systems and the gray-water circuit. In the black-water circuit usable compost and mineral fertilizers are produced. In big public buildings or healthcare centers the produced biogas is used for power generation. In the gray-water circuit a special membrane technology removes impurities. The chemically pure water is mineralized as required for the generation of drinking water quality. A complete, nearly autarkic circuitry is made possible under conservation of natural resources. Only discharge and evaporation losses are replenished. The Intaqua system is installed in improvement areas, big buildings, hotels and hospitals. Hormones and pharmaceuticals with their hazardous influence on the biological population are destroyed within a hygienization phase. Germs and bacteria do not have any chance of survival as well.

In addition to the functional regard the system also meets the economic requirements. The decentralized technology allows to go without expensive and high-maintenance sewerage systems to the greatest possible extent, depending on the legal regulations. This technology offers an alternative to the considerable costs of a possible sewer rehabilitation to all cities concerned.

In the context of a global project activity several technologies have been tested. Many realized projects excelled in their reliability and cost effectiveness. The most actual development uses the energy content of the water circuits. In this connection up to 20 % of the required energy is saved. In passive houses up to even 40 % of the energy can be saved.

For the installation of the technology a separate sewer pipe for the toilet flush and a second pipe for the gray-water circuit will be required. The additional costs amount to approx. 9 % of the costs for usual water installations in case of buildings under construction and approx. 15 % in case of a renovation.

The patented system with its described technical development sets a milestone in the decentralized water supply technology. Resources are saved, expensive desalination plants are downsized, lagoons are saved from salinization, maintenance costs for the sewage systems are minimized, toxins and harmful substances are removed, germs and bacteria are disposed of, and the economy of buildings is considerably increased. A reliable supply of drinking water has become possible for many people. This will also gratify the travel industry – independently from the location.
